Asti is like a crossroad between Piedmont and Lombardy, surrounded by the hills ok Monferrato. A city where you can still find the glories of the ancient noble families who had a major role in the European politics.
The several tower houses in the city are the symbol of its ancient power, the Collegiata di San Secondo is a harmonious synthesis of Romanesque and gothic architecture, the imposing Cattedrale dell’Assunta is one of the most important examples of gothic architecture in Piedmont.
And then there are the palaces along the central Via Alfieri: Palazzo Mazzetti, now home of the civic museum, Palazzo Ottolenghi, home of the Museo del Risorgimento, and Palazzo Alfieri, where the poet and tragedian Vittorio Alfieri was born; these are the symbols of the nobility of the Savoia dynasty.
And then the great autumn events, especially the Palio, that recalls the ancient glories of the Middle Ages, the Douja d’Or, the national wine competition, and the Festival delle Sagre, where food, wine and tradition are mixed.
